The Veganista Diaries: Welcome!

Hello ladies! I have decided to roll all my plant-based, vegan posts under the umbrella of The Veganista Diaries. I'm not sure how often I'll be blogging about my journey into vegan eating, but I feel compelled to share my experiences with you all. Like I mentioned a few days ago, this isn't my first rodeo. I tried a plant-based diet a few months back, and I loved the results. I felt energized and I lost weight. But I didn't feel like I was truly gung-ho about it. There was more room to grow, more things to learn. So I'm back, and I am committed to this lifestyle.

Few things: I am not a "true" vegan in most people's eyes. I still wear leather. My makeup probably has weird animal products in it. These are baby steps, and this is my journey. I'm doing the best I can at becoming as educated I can about my health and well-being, and it will be an evolution. If I'm one thing, I'm honest -- so no bullshit here. I'm not trying to preach or convert anyone. I'm simply sharing my journey.

So for those of you who have been asking, here's what I've been eating:

  • Lots of fresh veggies
  • Whole grains (mostly sprouted, organic)
  • Fresh fruit, often in juices with no added sugar
  • That's all, folks!

It's a beautiful thing to know that everything you are putting in your body has either been prepared by you, or someone else. Not an assembly line; not a machine. I have completely eliminated processed foods (that even goes for my beloved Amy's organic meals, for now at least). My rule of thumb is "the less ingredients the better." If I'm eating something packaged, it must be certified vegan and GMO-free.

Now before go rolling your eyes and thinking I'm looney tunes, hear me out: this stuff is not hard to find. If you are lucky enough to live in a big city, then you can find this stuff everywhere. And if you don't, you can order it online. There really should be no excuses. And it's only as expensive as you let it be. You can go nuts and buy fresh organic everything, or you can be more conservative and buy in season (which is always cheaper). And rice and beans are dirt cheap. So I don't wanna hear it! Plus, giving up your sugary, creamy Starbucks every day will definitely save you a couple of bucks.

A few other things to note: I have not given up my beloved wine and champagne. This is The Champagne Diet, remember? We're not about deprivation round here! I am researching vegan options, but for now, I'm still enjoying what I want. I usually have 1 or 2 glasses per night, a few nights a week. I never drink liquor, so I haven't done much research on that end, but the information is available to you online.

The biggest thing for me that truly  made this all click is the fact that I am now truly eating for my health. The weight loss end is great, but I have been knee-deep in research and studies surrounding all the shit I was putting in my body and I'm honestly  horrified. This lifestyle is not a punishment, it's the biggest reward I can give myself. Giving up those fatty cheeses is not to torture me anymore, it's necessary.

So, you're probably all wondering if I've lost weight yet? The answer is YES! 4 pounds so far. And I've popped out of bed without an alarm every morning. I've been in a great mood and have tons of energy (yet I'm surprisingly zen, if that makes sense?) I'm going to use the rest of the entries to post what I've been eating, including photos of my food, and how I'm doing in terms of weight-loss and feelings. In fact, feelings are what matter to me most right now.

In the meantime, feel free to follow me on Pinterest where I'm pinning articles, recipes, and food photos like a mad woman.

Cheers!

Healthy is The New Skinny! Check Out My Article on Mind Body Green

First of all I have to say - I am truly honored to contribute to Mind Body Green. If you read this blog regularly, you'll see how often I refer to their articles. They are a wellness wonderland. Chock full of inspiration, education and motivation (the three keys to success!)

Today they featured an article I wrote called "Healthy is The New Skinny: How I Learned to Love Myself and My Body." This is a topic I hold very close to my heart, and I truly hope that someone reads it and feels comforted. I surely wish I had read something like this 10 years ago when I found myself in the midst of a downward spiral. Luckily I pulled out of it and today, I am better, stronger, and happier than I have ever been. Changing the way you think and eat is one of the most challenging things you can do, but in the end the reward is so worth it.

So check it out ladies, and let me know what you think! And here's to your health and happiness!

XO,
Cara

Fan and Guest Blogger Stacy Jethroe Checks Out The Champagne Diet Menu at POP

When Champagne Dieter and bubble lover Stacy Jethroe pitched me this blog piece, I knew she'd have her work cut out for her. I mean, come on, she had to drive all the way to Pasadena to go sip Champagnes all night long and taste delicious food!?!? Now that's a labor of love if I've ever seen one. Stacy had a fabulous time at POP Champagne & Dessert Bar and owner Bob Earhart welcomed her with open arms. She gives us a glowing review of POP and their brand new Champagne Diet menu. Prepare to salivate!

As a bubbly girl, few things bring me more joy than discovering new places to feed my bubbly ways. When I heard there was a place in Southern California that would give me my fix AND feed me healthy bites from The Champagne Diet ™ it was as if ambrosia had fallen from heaven just for me. In that “it was totally meant to be” way, I found myself headed down from San Francisco to LA for a business conference with just enough extra time to take in the blissful experience of POP Champagne & Dessert Bar.

Nestled in Old Pasadena’s bustling shopping district, the first thing I noticed about POP was the bold, charcoal-colored hanging sign above its door, elegantly designed to let the name, well, pop. A cache of classic champagne bottles and magnums in the front windows herald to all who pass by the sparkly perfection to be found within. As we approached POP's open door on a breezy Thursday night, we heard the sound of live jazz beckoning.

Visually, everything about the intimate dining room let us know we wouldn’t leave without feeling as if we had been properly spoiled. Conceived by a Bay Area designer specifically for POP, the interior was warm, inviting, decadent but not overdone. Elegant chandeliers, walls the color of eggplant, a curved wooden bar complete with tall art deco mirror as the pièce de résistance. The room was comfortably full, the clientele mixed. Couples snuggled in over-sized, velvet-covered booths while friends conversed, enjoying appetizers and dessert after a day of local shopping. The jazz music that had called to us? Just one of the delightful extras provided each night at POP.

We were seated at a table in the center of the restaurant and, after chatting for a bit with owner Bob Earhart about POP’s three year history and the bubbly he prefers (owner-produced Pierre Peters Grand Cru has his heart), we perused the menu to see what goodies were in store. A bespeckled cutie named Steven approached to take our order.

First, the important stuff. Champagne flights? Yes, please. My date went for the “Champagne Bubbles” collection which included true French varietals only: Collet Brut Aÿ, Charles Heidseick Brut Reserve Reims, and Bollinger Special Cuvée Aÿ. I had the “Pretty in Pink Bubbles”, an array of lovely pinks from different countries of origin: Latitude 50 Rosé Sekt Germany, Raventos Cava Reserva Rosado ’08 Penedes, D’Orfeuille Rosé Touraine. (I loved the last one so much I ordered another full glass of it.)

A wonderful mix of creative simplicity, POP’s dinner menu is embracing and unique; every item had our mouths watering upon sight alone. My friend enjoyed an assortment of gourmet deviled eggs to start (bacon-onion for the win) and the Truffle Mac n’ Cheese as a main course. Though not part of the lighter fare of the Champagne Diet, these two delicately rich and creamy dishes are longtime POP menu favorites. Personally, though, I couldn’t wait to try the food I’d really come for.

The Champagne Diet menu was introduced at POP on January 3rd, 2012 and has already been a great success with clientele. Mr. Earhart began testing the diet himself in early December and--holiday indulgence aside--has dropped several pounds already (the flatbread pizza is his go-to favorite). I began my meal with the heirloom tomato bruschetta. The flavor was so deliciously light and bright, the crostini perfectly toasted; a drizzle of sweet balsamic and banana leaf garnish completed the beauty of the dish.

Next came the Champagne Chicken. A variation on the Chef’s Monthly Special, it was just the right amount of food with just the right amount of seasoning. Served with sautéed spinach, mushrooms, and cherry heirloom tomatoes, the chicken was cooked absolutely perfectly {italicized} with a hint of rosemary to balance. Two chocolate-covered strawberries for dessert and I was ready to call it a night. Total calorie intake: 632 for dinner/225 champagne. Total enjoyment intake: 100 percent satisfaction.

With a champagne menu featuring an extensive list of Recoltant Manipulant (RM) bubbles, also known as grower-produced or “Farmer Fizz”, and a menu designed to satisfy decadent and diet-conscious taste buds alike, POP is my new favorite bubbly haunt. Cara, you’re on to something here. This Champagne Diet thing is taking over...one meal (and several glasses of sparkling) at a time.

POP Champagne Bar Launches The Champagne Diet™ Menu

I am SO excited to share this news with you guys!

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, Bob Earhart, one of the owners of POP Champagne Bar in LA reached out to me to tell me how excited he was about The Champagne Diet™. Not only was he totally on board with the concept of living your most effervescent life, he was super excited that he could eat healthy, putting only the best in his body, AND still drink Champagne. As an owner of a Champagne bar who is trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle, this was amazing news for him.

Bob loved the idea so much that he decided to launch The Champagne Diet™ menu at POP! Bob worked with his chef to develop an amazing menu that really reflects the true essence of The Champagne Diet. High quality, nutritious foods paired with delicious Champagne. Who could say no to that?

The menu just rolled out this week and I'm thrilled to share it with you guys. It looks delicious! I mean, HELLO? Who wouldn't want to dine this way every night?? Hopefully I'll be hopping on a plane sometime in the very near future to go taste it myself!

If you're in the LA area, be sure to check out POP bar. Tell em The Champagne Diet sent ya! Also be sure to follow Bob's progress as he lives HIS most effervescent life!

Resolution for 2012: Live Your Most Effervescent Life!

“We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day.” ~Edith Lovejoy Pierce

I was never one for New Year's Eve. In my past life, as I like to call it, New Year's Eve was very sad for me. It was a time to look back and reflect on mistakes; where things went wrong. I thought about who or what I missed, and all the things I didn't get to do. That attitude was reflective of the way I felt about life in general, and it was pretty shitty.

As I've said before, I started living The Champagne Diet lifestyle by accident. I had gotten to the point where I was fed up. Things needed to change for me. I was not going to tolerate the negativity anymore. I wasn't going to tolerate it in my job, my relationships, my friendships, the way I felt about my body, or my eating habits.I was ready.

My first step was drinking Champagne (great way to start, huh?) But I was on a mission to find a low calorie drink that I could enjoy regularly, and bubbles were the perfect option for around 100 calories a glass. I was sold on that alone, but as soon as I really started drinking it, everything changed for me.

I fell in love with everything about Champagne. The sound of a fresh bottle opening was like poetry to me. The swift pop filled me with excitement, and pouring a glass was an experience in itself. Watching the gorgeous golden bubbles tower over my flute and finding a new reason to toast each time I drank it became a ritual. Drinking bubbles made me feel luxurious, beautiful and worthy. I wondered why people didn't drink Champagne all the time. Why were they saving this magical drink for New Year's Eve and birthdays? Why weren't they all indulging in something so wonderful every day? Weren't they worth it? And just like that, The Champagne Diet was born.

Champagne has truly become a metaphor for me. I have made it my priority to live my most effervescent life. To settle for nothing but the best. To truly live a Champagne life. To celebrate everything, no matter how small it may seem. To raise a glass each night and toast to something - anything. To me, life is best lived through rosé colored glasses.

I also found passion in sharing my "sparkling" new ways with all of you. The network we have built on Twitter and Facebook is remarkable to me. I remember when I launched this blog in 2009, I had no concept of where it would take me. I remember saying, "If I could change one person's way of thinking, my job would be done." Now, two years later, with press across the globe from Australia, to India, to the UK, to Italy, I think I may have done just that. There is nothing like touching someone else, and if I have touched any of you, I am eternally grateful for that. I want you all to live the sparkling, Champagne-filled lives you deserve.

Now, here we are, New Year's Eve 2011, and this holiday has become a true celebration for me. It's a chance to reflect back on all of the amazing things we have accomplished over the past 12 months, and really set our minds to achieve all of the goals in front of us in the coming year. It's a chance to learn from the mistakes, and celebrate what we've learned from them. It's a chance to be better.

I don't believe in traditional New Year's resolutions. I think we should make resolutions all year long, whenever we want to change. I don't believe in waiting until December 31st to decide you want to join a gym or stop eating carbs. But I do believe that you should think about the way you want to live your life in 2012. If there are things you want, go get them. You deserve them all. If there is negativity in your life, kick it to the damn curb. Fulfill yourself. Dream, and do. Don't be afraid to fall. Don't be scared of rejection. Only accept the best in your world. Live your most effervescent, Champagne life.

Go get it girls, it's all waiting for you.

With Love,

Cara
