Things I'm Loving

I really enjoyed writing my 'Weekly Discoveries' post last week & have decided to write a similar post for this week. Below are some pictures that were taken whilst 'Out & About' and they show what I have been loving this week from my little world of health & nutrition!

I came across this biscuit tin and fell in love with it! It's a fantastic way of being reminded of your goals (eg eating healthy or losing weight etc) and could make you think before you sneak a cheeky biscuit! My rule of thumb is generally to only have a biscuit if you really REALLY crave one, not just because they're there or you're hungry (have healthy snacks instead). If you feel that over-eating on high-fats foods is something that you can relate to then you may want to read my 'Are YOU an Over-eater' post [click here].

Ratatouille. I seriously love this stuff! It's basically a can of lovely chopped up vegetables in a rich tomato sauce and tastes delicious. Ratatouille is easy to add to virtually any meal and you eat it hot or cold (although I much prefer it hot). It's super quick to heat up on the hob and goes great with jacket potatoes, fish dishes and much more. It's a store cupboard staple end of.

I do love a cake. Yes you heard it - and I couldn't resist these lovely cupcakes when I was out shopping the other week (fuel needed!). If you're trying to lose weight (or indeed keep to a healthy weight) then you can still eat cakes.. but you just have to monitor how often you do so. If eating cakes is a daily/weekly occurrence and you're struggling to lose weight then you may want to think about having them monthly.. a 'treat' to look forward to you could say. Read up on the 80:20 rule [click here] for more information on how to have your cake and eat it too...!

I was bought this 'Keep Calm and Carry On' pot for used tea bags/spoons and really like it - it's both attractive and useful! I am still loving my Chai Tea (as featured in my Weekly Discoveries post [click here]) but thought I'd share with you my other favourite teas too: (in no particular order) Red bush, lemon green tea, honey green tea, 50:50 green & black tea, peppermint and of course, chai. Herbal teas are a fantastic way of staying hydrated and come in so many different varieties there really is one for everyone!

My final what 'I'm Loving' item is also a new discovery for me... a Season and Shake mix! I bought a few of these as they were on offer (half price!) and was amazed at the meals produced. This particular one (lemon & dill Salmon) was super quick to prepare and cook and really did produce a seriously tasty and healthy dish. All I did was pop 2 salmon fillets and some onions and peppers into the bag provided, sprinkled in the mix and popped it in the oven. I then served it with roasted potatoes.. yum!!

Thanks for reading - hope you've enjoyed it!

Weekly Discoveries

This week I seem to have discovered lots of 'new things' in the world of food & nutrition and I was eager to share them with you all. All of these pictures were taken whilst I was 'out & about' .

Chai Tea. If you follow me on twitter then you will know that I am a BIG fan of Chai Tea Lattes (it's the only hot drink I order at a coffee shop... ask for it 'skinny'), so I was extremely excited to see these Chai tea bags in the shops. Chai tea is described as being 'rich & spicy' and is a refreshing tea infused with the flavour of indian spices. I prefer to drink my Chai tea with a dash of skimmed milk. Mmmm.

I actually bought this Reduced Alcohol wine by accident - I didn't even know this product existed! I was planning on buying a mini bottle of wine (for portion control) and mixing it with diet-lemonade (spritzer!!) and picked up this one by chance (it looked pretty). ANYWAY.. This 'reduced alcohol' wine would be perfect for those who enjoy a glass of wine but want to cut down alcohol intake. Click [here] for more info on alcohol.

Innocent Smoothies. I love these and although they weren't a totally new discovery I haven't bought one in a LONG time. I was in the shops and needed something quick to see me through the morning.. I grabbed this bottle as I was most impressed with the contents counting to '2' of my '5 a day' and it tasted delicious. I will most certainly be re-purchasing!

Mini-Avocados. I don't actually think I've ever bought an avocado before (confession of a dietitian). I mean I've eaten them in salads, but I've never actually bought one myself! This week my mini-avocados finally became ripe and after pealing off a bit of the skin I scooped out the flesh and enjoyed on rye crackers.. delicious. Avocados are full of vitamin E and good fats for hair, skin and nails.. you could call them a beauty 'power' fruit.

No Added Sugar Jam. One word.. yum. I used to buy these jams all the time but then forgot about them (as you do) and it wasn't until I popped around to my friend's house that I saw a jar on the side! These jams not only taste good but have 'no added sugar'. The jam is sweetened using grape juice and is packed with the natural goodness of real fruit (wild blueberry is my favourite!)

I hope you've enjoyed reading my 'weekly discoveries' blog.. and hope that I have inspired you to look out for new foods and drinks next time your at the supermarket or shops!

Have a lovely weekend!

Supermarket Shopping Tips!

This is a highly requested blog piece on 'Supermarket Shopping Tips'. Love it or hate it the 'big' food shop has to be done, and whether you do it weekly or monthly I've put together some helpful hints that can save both lb's on the scales as well as £'s at the till (sorry to all you non-UK readers for that pun!).

1) I've said this before and I'll say it again - Never EVER go food shopping when you're hungry. Going food shopping when you're hungry will leave you more vulnerable to tempting smells and offers on those high fat and sugar food items that give a 'quick-fix' to your cravings. Go shopping after a meal or have a healthy snack before you go.

2) Always take a shopping list. If you've read my 'Preparation is Everything' blog then you will know how important planning ahead is. Having a weekly meal plan and shopping list will mean that you're more likely to stick with your healthy eating intentions and you won't need to worry about food waste at the end of the week.

3) Don't be afraid to read labels and compare products. Although the first time you do this your shopping may take slightly longer, the next time it won't as you've already read the labels and know which product is best for you! When comparing products that you are planning to eat the whole of, e.g. an individual pot of custard, compare the 'per portion' for calories/fat/sugar, and for foods such as sauces and dips which you may not eat the whole of, compare 'per 100g' for calories/fat/sugar. Supermarkets are getting better at colour coded labels with 'easy to read' nutritional information, but this chart below may be useful too:

4) Buy tins! Buying tinned or canned foods such as beans and lentils are a great addition to any store-cupboard. They have a long shelf-life and make a great low calorie, high fibre/protein addition to many meals. Try adding kidney beans to chili, butter beans to a chicken/fish dish or chickpeas to a curry.

5) Check 'Use-By' dates. This is where your weekly meal plan comes in handy - check that the fresh food that you have bought will be safe to eat on the day you had planned (this may apply to meats, fish or pre-packaged fruits and vegetables). If it won't be, then can you freeze it on the day or purchase and defrost it before you need it? Foods past the 'sell by' or 'best before' should be safe to eat but just won't be at their 'best'.. it's the 'USE-BY' date that matters.

6) Can you buy from the Value range? Some food items, such as frozen vegetables, fresh fruit and pasta are fantastic quality from the 'value' ranges, as well as being super value for money. Why not give them ago.. the money saved on a weekly basis will really add up!

7) Don't dismiss 'on-line food shopping'. Shopping online can be big money and time saver as it leaves you 100% in control of what goes into your basket (from the comfort of your own home) and you can have it delivered to your door when it suits. A small delivery charge is usually added however when you consider petrol/taxi costs etc sometimes it can really be worth it. Why not give it a go and see if it's for you?

Happy Shopping!

Preparation is Everything

The key to achieving your nutritional goals is preparation. Have a think about which aspects of your diet you wish to change (write them down if needed) and when you feel ready, set about preparing to action your goals..

"Failure to Prepare
is Preparing to Fail"

A weekly meal plan is a useful thing to do, especially if you have a busy lifestyle, as it provides a ‘go-to’ prompt as to what you had planned to eat on that particular day (no thinking required!). It may be useful to look at one or two recipe books for ideas. Once your meal plan is complete, put it where you can see it easily e.g. in your diary or display it on the kitchen on the front of your fridge or the inside of a cupboard.

The next step is to write a shopping list. List all of the foods that you will need to allow you to keep to your weekly meal plan and then hit the shops (see my 'supermarket shopping tips' blog for more info) - Just be sure to never go food shopping on an empty stomach as this will leave you open to temptations.

A note on equipment.. make sure you have the tools and utensils that you may need for the week e.g. foil, baking parchment (paper), pans, baking tray, grill pan and oil (1 calorie spray oil if desired) as well as sandwich bags and tupperwear containers (for chilling/freezing meals for other days or for taking meals out of the house).

Having a healthy meal plan and healthy foods in the house are the first steps to helping you to achieve a healthier lifestyle. If you're eating healthily Monday to Friday then you can afford to have the odd treat at the weekend, especially if you are exercising as well. See my 80:20 blog for more information on achieving a healthy, sustainable balance.

I hope you've had a lovely weekend and have a great week!
