Brooklyn NYC - Day 3

Let's just pretend we haven't skipped a beat with our blogging, and now we're magically onto our Saturday food adventures in NYC. And boy did we pack in a lot of food! After a full afternoon and evening of photographing a wedding in Brooklyn and at Bubby's, we got up pretty early to hit up the flea markets out in Williamsburg. But before we got on the G line train, we walked into "dough" for a healthy breakfast, DONUTS! these donuts are really the size of small cakes, but they came with high recommendation so we each had to have one. May had the Earl Grey Chocolate and I had the the Blood Orange which you see in the photo. Slightly denser than most Canadian donuts that we eat, there was a very satisfying chew in texture; but at the end of the day i'd have to say the draw to these donuts are their very unique flavours. The lineups all over speak for themselves.

After a quick visit to Artist & Flea, we walked right to the water's edge for Smorgasburg. My kinda market, this otherwise clear park space was full of food vendors. A wide range tents serving ready made food of all sorts. Anything you can imagine it was all there, we are talking about grilled cheeses, beef jerky, ramen noodles, tempeh, smokehouse bbq sandwiches, smoores, pickles, yes everything. After a long deliberation we shared a lobster roll and schnitzel. At $16, the lobster roll from Red Hook Lobster Pound was good, but not particularly unique. But holy schnitz! that pretzel bun schnitzel was likely one of the best sandwiches we've ever had. Called the "Bamberg", the chicken had a parsley panko crust, with cucumber daikon and carmelized onion mustard. boomshakalaka! this is a must for everyone.

We spent the late afternoon walking the amazing Highline and exploring around Chelsea before we eventually made our way to Eataly. What is Eataly you ask? well it is this amazing Italian food emporium that prior to this trip i read so much about through the new york times. Look, if Mario Batali is involved, you should have high expectations and that it definitely met. Just imagine every kind of inspiring and delicious food venues squashed into one big space. We're talking about aisles of imported and freshly made italian foods, specialized grocery selection, culinary and wine classes, and multiple food stations/restaurants serving up delicious eats. I was initially worried how pretentious this kind of place might be, but if you can appreciate the level of quality a place like this delivers; Eataly is an extremly lively and socially engaging space. It was noisy, crowded but everyone was excited by food in all ways imaginable and we were no different. We eventually found a bar infront of a pizza oven. May had the Salsicciotta, which was a Napolettana pizza with smoked provola cheese, mushrooms, neapolitan sausage and fresh basil. I had the Rigatoni with sweet sausage, tomato, grana padano, pecorino and bitter greens. Simply perfection; so good infact that our oohs and ahhs convinced the people next to me to order the same thing, true story. And like every good evening, we ended it off with pistacio and coconut gelato, yes sir.

Grilled Cheese

We love living right outside of Kensington Market. There's just so much options, not only for all kinds of groceries but also for a quick bite! The Grilled Cheese is just 5 minutes away from my place, so that's where we headed for Sunday's lunch.

If you're looking for a good grilled cheese sandwich, this is where you need to go. Grilled cheeses are all they have here, but don't just expect the average ones you see everyday, this place offers creative twists to the much loved sandwich.

When I walked into the Grilled Cheese, a thought came into my mind immediately, this place should be in a ski resort! The wood benches, tables and cozy fire place reminded me of those ski resort cabins that serve poutines and pulled pork sandwiches. I love the cozy-Canadian-feel to it.

It was hard to pick something from the menu, because everything sounds so delicious and the ingredients are all very well balanced. I eventually chose the Mushroom Madness (cheddar, grilled portobello and cremini) with added bacon, and Gabe had the Grilled Motzy (fresh mozzarella, bazil pesto, arugula and vinaigrette) and off course added bacon (We're pretty serious about bacon, I tell ya.). Gabe also ordered a bowl of homemade tomato soup because he never feels he's full enough!

I really liked my mushroom grilled cheese, but I think next time I'm going to opt out the extra bacon, the mushrooms would be better appreciated on their own in my opinion. Gabe's sandwich was really good too, the pesto is distinct and there's quite a bit of arugula, which we love! The tomato soup is delicious, and even better when you dip your sandwich in it!

If you don't think a grilled cheese can get you full, you're wrong, these delicious devils can fill you up pretty quickly, plus your order also comes with a handful of chips and a pickle. If that's not enough for you, a bowl of homemade soup will definitely fill you up!

lunch for three

At Richmond court w/ Richard & Anna. Club sandwich, garlic gailan, seafood fried rice, shredded duck vermicelli

not so recent meals

bacon wraped chicken breast + sweet potatoe fries

I meant to post these a while ago, but totally forgot!

First dish up is a dish I made from a Jamie Oliver recipe. I happened to flip through the Jamie book that Gabe left here for me, and found this super simple chicken breast recipe. All you need to do is to mix the leek and thyme with olive oil and salt (I didn't have any thyme, so I used a bit of sage), wrap the chicken breast with a few pieces of bacon, and then place them all on a tray so you can cook them in the oven for 30 minutes. I also made a side of sweet potato fries to go with the chicken, but it didn't turn out so crispy. If you have a better recipe that makes good and crispy sweet potato fries, please let me know!

tomato ham sandwich

I don't have too much to say about this one, except to say that tomatoes and ham with cheddar is my favourite sandwich combo!

leek tortolini soup

Normally, if I have some tortellini, I'd make it into a pasta, but after I came back from Rome, I made way less pastas. I'm not sure if it's cuz I ate too much of it in Rome, or that my standard of pasta has gotten higher and my pastas can never measure up to those I've had in Rome. Anyway, I made the tortellini into a soup this time. I looked up this, and substituted a few things that I don't have. It turned out delicious. The leek added in so much flavour in the soup.

random mash ups

hello there, haven't posted in a while. we've been all over the place this past week and here are some meals we've been mashing up randomly while trying to eat up our pantry

panko breaded chicken breast, tomatoes, boccocini, basil on pasta
we breaded chicken breast with panko that was on sale, then added boccocini, tomatoes, sauce on pasta with basil. no leftovers here, but definately a random mash up of things

egg spam on rice
we made this dish with some left over rice and stir fry and completed it with a slice of spam with a hole of a fried egg inside! oh and that's a left over shrimp on top.. haha (like i said, mash up)

antipasto ham sandwich and split pea soup
some split pea soup from a previous meal, with a sandwich where i added a good layer of antipasto that we bought from costco

sandwich club

so.. we've been making sandwiches a little more often than not these days. no particular reason.. just so happened. i've never really liked sandwiches since i was a kid, and a very possible reason was the fact that i was spoiled with a hot food lunch box. weither it was macaroni n' cheese with hotdogs or a chicken pot pie, my mom would always have something hot n' steaming for me to bring to school.

rosmary ham croissant

here we have a croissant sandwich with rosmary ham greens and all the fixn's. i'm pretty sure i made a little honey mustard for this, and toasted it of course.

crusty bread cajan chicken

for some reason this "sandwich bread" as they call it from Metro grocery store is so friggn' yummy. 3 "sandwich breads" for i think $2.99 which isn't cheap but not expensive either. I think its very similar to Calbrese bread..

breakfast sandwich

and of course, the breakfast sandwich. We foudn this "healthy" bread at Honest eds.. and then melted some cheese on top of ham slices and medium cooked egg. tasty, meaty yet not heavy or gross. a great weekend breakfast

crab salad orso salad

i posted this because i got bored of eating crab salad sandwiches one day i decided to remake it into an orso salad. just chopped up some greens and mixed it all together and it worked!

jade plant?

and because we got a little sunshine, i took our jade plant out for a little photoshoot on the deck.

hope the sunshine decides to come back soon =]

tomatoes?

If you've read the about section, you would know that I love tomatoes in every kinda and shape.

Italy has some of the best tomatoes. They're sweeter and juicier, I've had so much of it in the past a few month.

Here is a grilled tomato, cheese, ham sandwich, and a pasta with ricotta cheese and pan fried tomatoes, onions with garlic.
