Brooklyn NYC - Day 2

1

2

Hello, I haven't appeared on the inter-webs for a while, but here I am blogging again!
Day 2 of visiting NYC was a busy one for us because it is the day we shot Rosanna and Woody's wedding. You can check out the wedding photos soon at Gabe's photo blog, but for now, I will talk about the yummy brunch that prepared us fully for this working day.

Our Air BnB host Tammy is a super sweet girl and suggested a bunch of places for brunch. Gabe and I picked Maggie Brown since it's only a 5 minute walk from where we stayed. I ordered the Grandma Harriet, which has crispy eggs over jalapeno cheddar grits. This dish is done very well, if you like a good southern breakfast, you can't go wrong with this one. Gabe had the corn Beryl Evans which is a corn beef hash topped with two sunny side up eggs. Your traditional corn beef hash with a unique flare to it. I have to say my favourite part of this meal is the raspberry butter; this sweet whipped butter on top of home made biscuit is such a delicious treat. If any of you have a recipe, please let me know because I really wish I have a jar of it in the fridge.

A Stockyard's Brunch

woo! this was a whiles back.. but its a good one.  We finally made our way to the Stockyards earlier this summer.  Clearly a neighbourhood hot spot, we had a short wait just as more people came in behind us.

A Stockyards Brunch

Known as a smokehouse and bbq joint, the Stockyards serves up meat in all fashions and in plenty, so vegetarians beware.  We heard a lot of great things about this place and made a visit for our favourite meal.

May had the chicken and waffles.  It had a spicey crispy skin and a sweet citrus-y glaze poured all over.  The chicken was very tasty with a unique bold characteristic.  I had the Shirred Eggs which is basically eggs baked in a dish with creamy collard greens, white cheddar and smoked lardons.  Yes, lardons are indeed the fatty parts of bacon and I promise you, it added an amazing richness and saltyness to the dish.  Although a bit decadant, the serving size was appropriate, it was the perfect dish to dip my crusty rye toast into.

We loved the homestyle - open kitchen - neighbourhoody feel of the stockyards, and of course the smokey meaty aroma throughout.  We'll be back very soon!

Table 17

Farmer's Breakfast

We might not have been posting as often this summer but we haven't stopped trying out new brunch spots. Gabe and I have heard good things about Table 17, so we went a couple weeks ago. And the result you ask? I think we found a new favourite.

First of all, I much prefer a brunch place that's filled with daylight. Table 17 is not only well light but also cozy. Qith the wool panels on the wall and rustic furniture, the place feels pretty close to home.

Their menu is fairly simple, when you read the descriptions of each dish, it seems there are many little things that make up each dish. I like to get as many varieties as I could on my plate and the farmer's breakfast caught my eyes immediately. Scotch eggs, Ontario cheddar & brie, pork rillette and country toast make up this rustic breakfast. I had no idea what a scotch egg was until we asked the waitress. And you might have guessed from the picture above, a scotch egg is a hard boiled egg wrapped in sausage meat and then deep-fried. Sounds heavenly delicious, doesn't it? It was! Plus, the portion is just right and I got what I wanted for brunch, balanced protein/green/starch. Oh and I shall not forget to mention the caramelized onions is so perfect with cheese and toast.

Gabe had the Sloppy Giuseppe, two fried eggs served with Bolognese Sauce and fried polenta ,and we shared a side of double smoked bacon. Both are very good. Gabe wished there's more polenta in the Sloppy Giuseppe, because that's his favourite starch to have, not to mentioned it is fried!

brunch and bowling

Earlier in May's birthday weekend festivities, she wished to have brunch and bowling with some of her closest friends.  So we went to Paese on King street, and then walked five minutes over to the Ballroom.

Our bowling venue was pretty set, so it was my task to find a brunch place nearby, which suprisingly was a lot harder to find than I thought.  There is a lot of pre-theater type dinner places in the King/John area, but brunch not so much.  And of course, we've been to O&B so many times in addition to my birthday, so we weren't going to do that again.

Brunch at Paese

May and I had the steak and eggs platter for two, which as you can see was a pretty sad dish. The steak was had good flavour since it was fatty but otherwise had very little value or interest especially priced at $35 (Celine+Jin shared the same dish and were equally dissapointed). You'd think they could at least put an arugula salad with the dish and make it more filling to share between two people.

What we gathered from everyone else's dishes was the food was fairly decent. The marscapone scrambled eggs (top left) was well made and tasty. My brother had a craving for the potato pizza and it hit the spot. Shirley ordered the sweet polenta (bottem left) and thought it was a unique combination. And we enjoyed the pear and gorgonzola salad to help round out our incomplete first dish.

We really enjoyed the large square table in the restaurant space, it made for easy conversation, and perfect to present the birthday cake (more on the cake later). Our server was a little difficult, and made a fuss when we asked for separate bills, even though we saw him separate it for another table (he never asked us in begining when he took our orders, and it should have been his resposibility to if it was so complicated). The rest of the staff and back kitchen otherwise was very warm and accomidating, especially helping me out with lighting the birthday candles.

the ballroom
the ballroom

After brunch we made our way to the relatively new ballroom. A fairly trendy and inviting space with a full bar and restaurant seating upstairs. We snacked on a gargantuan order of nachos, which were amazing. The kind of nachos that has the same crunch and topping consistency from the first to the last bite. The deep fried pickles were also very well made, and not something you see often. We will definitely be back for more bowling and food, theres a great variety of bar food choices on their menu.

Hank's Brunch

dutch pancake

We've heard good things about Hank's,  Jamie Kennedy used to head up the kitchen and they used to have the coffee guru Sam James that now among many other things, curates the coffee selection at the Beast (that's gonna be the next post!)  So we thought we'd try it out with none other than our favourite brunch peers.

The thing that really caught our eyes on the menu was the breakfast poutine which is built with sausage, poached eggs, cheddar cheese, tomato, fries and topped with hollandaise sauce; sounds too delicious to pass on, no? Gabe was surely locked down on that one. I went with the eggs pacific, a classic on brunch menus. The eggs were poached just right, fish is of high quality, and everything is nicely put together, except there's no wow factor. I was happy with what I got. The breakfast poutine has room for improvement. The hollandaise was on the heavier side, and we thought perhaps cheese curds would probably do better in the dish than grated cheddar cheese.

The dish that really impressed us was the dutch oven pancake. What came to the table was a single thick pancake (much like this one). I have to say this is one of the best pancakes I've had in a long time. The pancake looks firm, but the inside is super fluffy; the combination of textures is just so perfect. It's worth a trip to Hank's just for this mouthwatering pancake.

Poached Eggs

perfectly poached

You probably all know how much Gabe and I love our weekend brunch by now. When we have a little more time in the morning, we try to whip up a hearty breakfast at our own kitchen as well. We usually go for the bacon, but this time, we decided to poach some eggs.

I'd like to say I know how to poach eggs too, but I can't take credit for this one. Gabe is the super star cook in this relationship, really; plus, my knowledge of poached egg was really limited to those involved in Chinese noodle soups until I met Gabe.

The magic potion to poaching eggs is a few drops of vinegar. The vinegar helps the protein stay together in water. When dropping in the egg, the more gentle you are the better. We like our eggs runny, so we only poached them for about 2 minutes till the egg whites are cooked, if you like it firmer you can add a minute or two.

The eggs were served with sausages and saute spinach on rye toasts, topped with a homemade hollandaise sauce. I just learned on Top Chef Canada (It's so addicting to watch!) hollandaise sauce is one of the most difficult sauce to make. Gabe's hollandaise sauce here is not really close to the real rich hollandaise. He just winged it with an egg yolk, butter, mustard (substituted for the lemon juice) and Thyme. It was a nice complement to the dish.

The Brunch Matrix List

brunch matrix
Our brunch list is finally here! May and I recently drew up a crazy matrix chart giving scores to the brunch places we've recently visited downtown Toronto. Each brunch place is evaluated on five categories: Ambience (AMB), Originality/Variety (O&V), Taste/Execution (T&E), Presentation (PRS), Service/Satisfaction (SER). We of course like to try new inventive dishes, but also expect a good overall brunch experience and therefore we have weighted all categories equally. 0-1pts warrants a failed expectation, 2-3pts is average/par, and 4-5pts for exceptional standards.

Where do we hear about these brunch places? We read about it, hear about it from all over the place and almost always we reference BlogTO. Our ratings are based on actual memories of our visits (and in some cases multiple visits); all we can say is first impressions do mean a lot. This by no means a complete spectrum of brunch places in Toronto, but if someone wants to sponsor us to brunch more often, we'd gladly oblige! So.. without further adieu, here's our list!

#10 - Bellvue Cafe 14 pts = AMB 3 + O&V 3.5 + T&E 2 + PRS 3.5 + SER 2
Bellvue Cafe Bellvue Cafe
One of the few brunch dedicated joints in Kensington market, our experience here was a little underwhelming. The hipster servers were a little more into themselves socializing, than serving us and my steak was overdone, and the biscuit was stale. It doesn't help that we were the only patrons in the house on Saturday at noon.

#9 - Harlem Underground 15.5 pts = AMB 2.5 + O&V 3 + T&E 3 + PRS 4 + SER 3

All in all, everything was average. It did feel like we were brunching at a Bar, and we were the only ones. We did enjoy the clean & colourful plating presentation on the long rectangular plates.

#7 (tied) - Universal Grill 16 pts = AMB 3.5 + O&V 3 + T&E 3 + PRS 3 + SER 3.5
Universal Grill Universal Grill
A warm, low key diner-like brunch joint on Dupont + Shaw. The burgers + fries is really where its at, the brunch dishes are average. They do have really good fresh juices though.

#7 (tied) - Grapefruit Moon 16 pts = AMB 3.5 + O&V 3.5 + T&E 3 + PRS 2.5 + SER 3.5
grapefruit moon chalkboard grapefruit moon
Right in our neighbourhood, this is one of our quick staple brunch spots. Most dishes have a mexican flare to them, but also tends to be a little greasier and messier than most. This place is always bustling with people, but you never have to wait too long and the outdoor patio is great in the summer.

#6 - Mitzi's on College 17 pts = AMB 3 + O&V 4 + T&E 3.5 + PRS 3 + SER 3.5
Mitzi's on College Mitzi's on College
A wide selection on their menu includes staple breakfast/brunch items, but they also have daily specials. May had their famous oatmeal pancake which was unique, tasty and very filling. I had their Calilou eggs benny with coconut bread special, a dish nothing like i've ever had and it was really good. The ambience, presentation and overall experience met our expecations.

#5 - The School Bakery & Cafe 17.5 pts = AMB 4 + O&V 4 + T&E 4 + PRS 4 + SER 1.5
the school bakery and cafe the school bakery and cafe
Yes, we weren't impressed with their service, and apparently we've heard other people have similar experiences too. We'd like to give them a chance, as they seem to have a good formula for a brunch experience. The school thematic is present, but not in an obvious or cheesy way. The dishes were tasty, and very well presented. I particularly like the Staubb cast iron pans they use for the eggs benny. If they can work on their attention and appreciation to their customers, they could easily bounce a couple spots up on our brunch list. our extended review here.

#4 - Lola's Commissionary 19.5 pts = AMB 4 + O&V 4 + T&E 4 + PRS 3.5 + SER 4
Lola's Commissionary Cheesecake Stuffed French Toast
The setting is inside a large house, and it really feels like you're at your friend's place for brunch. Wall hooks are filled with everyone's winter coats. Cozy brick walls with lots of space yet every table has a lively conversation. We liked the sexy potatoes, unique items like egg white fritattas and cheesecake french toast were winners. Every plate had a side of cut fruit. Service was warm and the overall vibe is very relaxed and non pretentious. our extended review here.

#3 - Saving Grace 20.5 pts = AMB 4 + O&V 5 + T&E 4.5 + PRS 4 + SER 3

A neighbourhood favourite for those along Dundas West. There is always a lineup out front, with a self serve queuing list. Unfortunately and fortunately, this place is small and while we love the intimacy, you really need to have a patient stomach, which we can't say we ever have. The menu is always changing, with small treats, fresh juices and endless hot beverages. All dishes are full, with a good veggie balance, well executed and not heavy. Chicken + waffles, Bacon wrapped figs gorgonzola frittata, need i say more? oh, and add on a lamb sausage, its incredible, trust me. our extended review here.

#2 - Mildred's Temple Kitchen 21.5 pts = AMB 4.5 + O&V 4 + T&E 4.5 + PRS 4.5 + SER 4
condiments condiments
This is probably the most refined brunch places on our list. The open kitchen, large modern open architectural space, with a gorgous window wall to view the trains passing by and grasses in the wind. We find the extra you pay at Mildred's, goes a long long way. The only knock we have on them is that they don't change their menu too often, however the execution on every dish is absolutely superb. Simple things like freshly made biscuits and jams are on a whole different level. We dare you to find a better Huevos Rancheros in the city. The blueberry pancake is pretty darn good too, just ask Eric, May's 11 year old brother who wolfed it all down in a flash. our extended review here.

#1 - The Hoof Cafe 23.5 pts = AMB 4.5 + O&V 5 + T&E 5 + PRS 5 + SER 4
hoof cafe bar top hoofcafe
The top of our brunch list is kinda bitter sweet for us. When we first compiled the scores, we had no idea that our number one brunch place was actually closing down. Yepp, you read correctly, if you don't already know, they are closing down because the owners want a new challenge and have a new ambition. So if you have a chance you better head over there before Feb 28th, when it officially closes; chances are you'll probably see us there. the hoof is legendary.

Expect an incredible culinary adventure and more. Known for meaty extra parts in their dishes, everything is balanced, playful and deeply refined. You can tell the chefs have put a lot of heart, patience and care into every dish. There is no better way to start off your meal than with bone marrow beignets. Cow Tongue grilled cheese was explained as a slow cooked process, that is then thinly sliced with a tiny bit of pastrami and layered with delicate brie. Foie Gras on brioche french toast is scrumptious beyond belief; salty-sweet and buttery fireworks in your mouth, apple matchsticks with coarse salt help lighten the entire dish. However, the thing that impresses us most is the simplest and cheapest thing on the menu, $3 baked beans; it renders me speechless, without culinary words to explain, and nothing but drool. We love this place, and will miss it dearly. our multiple reviews here.

wuhoo! so there's our top 10! Agree? Disagree? have suggestions? We'd love to hear from you in the comments below. We love this great city of Toronto and all the great culinary adventures; the brunch scene is no different. Since we've created this list, we've visited a few other brunch places including "The Beast", so stay tuned for stories posted. We also have Bloordale Pantry, some east-end/leslieville eateries (since we haven't been around there in a while) and many other other brunch places on our radar. Feel free to suggest us some. Thanks for visiting and happy brunching!

Saving Grace

Chicken and Waffles

We're very serious brunch fans. Even on the coldest and snowiest day (okay, maybe not the coldest, but it was snowing!), we convinced ourselves to go out for that delicious dish filled with bacon and eggs.

If you've been to Saving Grace, you know doesn't matter what kind of day it is, there is always a line to get in. It's that good. So after 30mins of waiting in the snow, we finally got a table. Seeing their menu got us both really excited, and almost forgot to whine about our freezing fingers and toes. There are some really exciting dishes that are made with traditional ingredients but cooked in a new way. I decided on the waffles with roasted chicken and Gabe got the frittata topped with bacon wrapped figs.

They look pretty fantastic, don't they? Let me tell you, they tasted even better. Gabe couldn't stop talking about the bacon wrapped figs after..

Happy almost Friday!

Lola's Commissionary

Before the Holiday Season ended, we all decided to reward ourselves with a feast of brunch so we will have a good start to the new year.

Lola's Commissary has been on our minds for awhile, since it's rated one of the best new brunch places in 2009 by Blog TO. How did we like it? You ask. We loved it. With the variety of their elaborate menu and the homey atmosphere, the experience made us very happy brunch-ers

Lola's Commissionary

Cheese Cake Stuffed French Toast

I ordered the Cheesecake Stuffed French Toast. I only took a glance at the menu, and knew that's what I wanted. Cheesecake+French Toast, how could it get better than that? It came topped with berry compote. Not heavy at all, but a little too much berry to me, still, very delicious, I would say.

Gabe ordered the Eggs Lola. It's essentially poached eggs, ancho chicken on tortillas. Nice balance of the different textures. You don't get poached eggs on tortillas all the time.

Mike got the Egg White Frittata, a very health option, and good for those vegetarians out there.
The frittata came topped with goat’s cheese, mushrooms, spinach and hemp pesto. It's worth mentioning that most of the savoury items come with a choice of frites, sexy potatoes, or salad. Both Gabe and Mike got the sexy potatoes, and it's something you would have to try when you're there. It's not just your average home fries, but a mix of sweet potatoes and Yukon potatoes roasted together with herbs and paprika. Now that is a new favourite side dish!
