Healthy Snack Ideas for on the GO!

Healthy snacks are essential for those of us with busy lives - they keep us fuelled throughout the day, prevent the 3pm chocolate binges and leave your head (not your stomach) in charge of what you eat at the end of the day! Healthy Chocolate Protein Brownie Recipe

These chocolate brownies are not only packed with protein, soluble fibre, antioxidants and vitamin A but they contain NO flour, butter or sugar either. They taste AMAZING and are very diet and weight loss friendly at only 100 calories a piece.

Kick ass Kale Smoothie

If you're after a nutritious post-workout smoothie recipe then look no further.. this recipe is packed with protein, vitamins and anti-oxidants. Drink within one hour of your work-out for maximum benefit and to enhance protein absorption. The lovely Lean Machine boys vlogged my 'Kick ass Kale' post-workout smoothie recipe and you can see it here... !



 
And here's how to make...
 
Ingredients (serves 1):

- 1 scoop of protein powder (vanilla, plain or strawberry flavour) - or you could use skimmed milk powder - 4.5 heaped tablespoons provides 20g of protein.
- ½ frozen banana

- 6 medium strawberries
- 1 cup (250ml) almond milk

- Hand full of Kale (green veg packed with vitamins!)
- Stevia/Truvia (100% natural sweetener to taste)

How to Make:

1) Add your protein powder, banana (chopped and frozen over night), strawberries and almond milk to the blender and whizz for a minute or so..

2) Then add your kale (shred in your hands first).. whizz until all of the kale is nicely blended..

3) Add stevia/Truvia to taste (e.g. 1 small sachet).. whizz again and enjoy your feel good post work out smoothie!


Nutrition Stats Per Shake: 238 kcal / 30g Carbs / 27g Protein
 
Nutritional Benefits:Packed with protein, vitamin A, C and K and antioxidants

Healthy Apple Crisps - In the Pink!

October is 'breast cancer awareness month', and so I've decided to embrace the 'In the Pink' and 'Tickled Pink' campaigns by revisiting one of the most popular recipes on my blog 'Apple Crisps' - click here to see the original post.


Apple crisps have to be the healthiest crisp in the world.. after all they are packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fibre.. can you get much better than that?!  - well they also taste amazing and are super fun to make too.

To keep to the 'In the Pink' theme you will see that (hopefully) most things in my new recipe video are pink... apples, dress, nails, place mat.. so what are you waiting for?! Press play to see how you can create the Pink Lady Apple's version of the amazing apple crisp! These crisps also take less time to cook than in my previous recipe post.. which is good for me!

Healthy Hummus Recipe

I love hummus.. do you? Hummus not only tastes great, but it's packed with protein, healthy fats and soluble fibre - making it a super-food in my opinion! Making your own hummus is a great way of not only saving money but cutting calories and fat too. It's really simple to do too!

Home Made Hummus

 Makes: 7 Servings
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cooking Time: 0 minutes

 
Ingredients: 1 tin of chick peas (240g drained)
1 heaped tbsp (20g) of tahini - creamed sesame seeds
½ cup (100g) fat-free natural yoghurt (more for creaminess)
1 tbsp of lemon juice
1-2 crushed garlic cloves
1 tsp salt
Chickpea water - Watch the video for when to add this!

Optional extras: 1 tsp of cumin, olive oil and/or paprika or a handful of sunflower seeds or a chopped red pepper
 
How to make... Simply put all of the above ingredients into a food processor and blend until smooth.. simple!
 
 
Nutrition Per 50g Serving (made without oil): 60 kcal, 3.5g Protein, 6g Carbs, 2.5g Fat
Nutritional Benefits: Source of soluble fibre, unsaturated fats & vegetarian protein
Lower in calories and fat than shop bought...
(full-fat per 50g: 160kcal, 13g fat; reduced fat per 50g: 130kcal, 9g fat)
 Serving Suggestion: As a dip with crudites such as carrot sticks or in a wholemeal wrap with roasted veg for lunch.
