Sayonara Dairy + Giveaway Winner

Is it time to say goodbye to dairy?  More and more people are considering it, and an increasing amount of health professionals are recommending it.  Why would we give up something we grew up on, something we were told "does a body good?"  Mark Bittman writes a good argument on why you may want to consider passing on dairy in "Got Milk? You Don't Need It."
50 million people are lactose intolerant.  90% of Asian-Americans and 75% of African Americans can't tolerate dairy.  So why is the Department of Agriculture still recommending 3 cups daily for every man, woman and child?  Sure it contains nutrients: protein, calcium, etc.  But is it worth it if you have a sensitivity or allergy?  No!  Being the second most common food allergy, it's mind boggling that milk is still promoted as a universal health food.  I was thrilled to see Bittman discuss the very real role milk plays in digestive distress; he focuses on GERD (acid reflux).  Simply removing it from the diet may alleviate it.  But want to know something?  If you've got any gastrointestinal distress, the first thing that should go is dairy.  Nervous about calcium?  You can get it elsewhere (sesame seeds, dark leafy greens, sardines, tofu).  Besides, the keys to bone health are exercise (particularly strength training) and Vitamin D.  So maybe it's time to re-evaluate the presence of dairy in your life.
Last, but not least. We chose our giveaway winner from yesterday's post. Congrats to: Shannon Galligher Jarvis! We will be contacting you shortly!

My Muesli *Product Review* & *Giveaway*

It was a friend who first told me about this website (thanks Cat!) - and I really was so excited to check it out.. Breakfast is my favourite meal of the day and I love porridge and muesli! So who are they?! My Muesli are a 'one of a kind brand' (well, I've never heard of this kind of thing before) and sell custom-mixed organic muesli. Their website [click here] allows you to mix up your very own muesli from scratch and add what ever you like! - skipping out the nasties that you don't like (or the bits that you pick out from your current cereal!).

The 'Princess' Mix is made especially for kids.. and there's even one for Pirates too!

My Muesli produce two types of products (as pictured above) - the large tubes of Muesli which you make yourself, by selecting the...

Muesli Base / Base Enhancer / Fruit
Nuts & Seeds / Extras (yummy chocolate bits found here!)

My very own My Muesli!! You can name the muesli tubes whatever you like!

.. and then there's the 'Muesli 2 Go' Pots .. which are perfectly portioned for 'breakfasts on the go' - all you need to do is add milk or yoghurt and eat!

    *Yum*

Overall I was very impressed with the service I received and wanted to share my love of Muesli with my readers in a giveaway. In case you're wondering.. my favourite mueslis from the above were the 'Bircher Muesli' - which I enjoyed as porridge (warmed with milk and fresh apple) & then simply soaked in milk with chopped fresh apple - as recommended on the website, the 'Blaubeer Muesli' - which is blueberry based (not beer!) and the 'Espresso Muesli' - oh my this was divine.. the perfect blend of chocolate with a hint of coffee (and I don't even like coffee!).

I have two tubes of muesli to give away - 'Nichola 1' and 'Bircher'
And two 'My Muesli 2 Go' pots - 'Blaubeer' and 'Schoko' - chocolate! - so TWO winners will receive one of each!

All you have to do to enter is leave a comment below telling me your top 3 ingredients that you would include (or have included!) in your very own My Muesli 'Mix' and then 1 ingredient that you would skip!

Click [here] to start making your very own My Muesli and click [here] to read more about each ingredient.

    And just so you know...
    • My top three ingredients are: Apple Bits, Hazelnuts & Cranberry Chocs
    • I would skip: Wholemeal Cornflakes (don't ask me why - I just don't like them!)
.. the ermm chocolate cornflakes sound good to me though!!

You have until May 12th to enter.. winners will be picked at random.. good luck!

*This competition is now closed* - Thank you for your entries!
The Winners have been announced at the end of the following blog post.. click here!

P.s My Muesli aren't paying me for this blog - they just kindly sent me some samples to try!

Graze - Product Review & Giveaway!

How excited was I the other day to receive my first snack box! The lovely people at graze.com sent me two boxes to try and if you haven’t heard about the new ‘snack box craze’ the basic concept is that you get convenient ‘healthy snacks by post’. The boxes are designed to encourage you to munch on goodness throughout the day, instead of biscuits and crisps! The boxes are sent first class, with free delivery and you can have them delivered to home or work.
I love the idea of snack boxes and receiving one myself made me think about the benefits of this service, as well as the people who would benefit from it most. So if you would like to see my personal review (and if this service could be good for you) then read on!

So.. this is what came in the post..
    My Graze Box... *oooh*

    And Opened.... (*very pleased*)!

You can choose from two different box types: The 'nibble box' which contains 4 of 100 natural nibbles, or the 'nutrition box' which contains only the healthiest snacks. Naturally, I chose to have the 'nutrition box' and out of the 'eatwell box', 'boost box' and 'light box' I picked the 'eatwell box' as I felt it fitted in nicely with the 80:20 rule that I like to follow (mainly healthy snacks with the odd treat now and then).

For a closer look at what my snack boxes contained....
(along with their nutritional contents - printed on a little card inside)

    Top Box:
Green Olives with Chilli & Garlic = 133kcal, 13.6g fat
Bonnie Wee Oatcakes: Cheese & chive oatbakes, red onion marmalade = 114kcal, 4g fat
Cherry, Tomato, Basil & Pesto Focaccia = 141kcal, 8.8g fat
*After 3:30 Mint: Peppermint sultanas, Belgian dark choc & almonds = 202kcal, 12.8g fat

    Bottom Box:
Salsa Mexicanos (low in calories) = 51kcal, 0.8g fat

*Pina Colada: Pineapple, coconut and mango (full of vitamin C) = 103kcal, 4.2g fat
*Mississippi BBQ Pistachios (good source of fibre) = 185kcal, 16.9g fat
*Jaffa Cake: Belgian dark choc, orange sultanas & roasted hazelnuts = 210kcal, 13.7g fat

*what the giveaway box will contain - due to use-by dates!

So what did I think.. Well, I loved mine! I think that they are a great way to help you snack on healthier options, and really do stop you reaching for those 'office biscuits' or crisps. I ate my 'healthier' nibbles mid-afternoon (I have fresh fruit mid-morning) as well as a part of my lunch, and then found the 'healthy chocolate' nibbles an ideal treat on an evening.. chocolate and goodness complete with portion control.. brilliant!
In my opinion the graze boxes are great for people who snack between meals and who want convenient, healthy snacks that are ready to eat. If you're not a natural 'snacker or grazer' though then these snack boxes may just add unnecessary calories to your daily intake. My dietitian friends are also fans of the snack box however would like to see 5 or 6 snacks per box (and pay slightly more) so there is at least one for each day Monday to Friday. I liked the 4 snacks per box, however just wished that they lasted slightly longer than 2-3 days! - They were too delicious to resist! In future I would like to try the 'boost box' on a weekly basis (one a week).. but that's just me!
If you would like to win one of these yummy boxes then here is what to do:
