Hibiscus

I just moved to a neighborhood close to Kensington Market, and I love it. I can walk to all these cute coffee shops and markets. There's also quality meat and cheese shops.

On a Friday afternoon, I went on a stroll with my cousin who newly started university. We had coffee at Ideal Coffee and then went in and out of thrift shops. We chose to have dinner at Hibiscus, since I've heard so many good things about it, plus, everything is vegetarian/vegan.

The cafe is pretty small, but it's well presented. I love how they displayed their condiments on the shelf.

I had the pear and blue cheese buckwheat crepe, which was delicious. I especially like the buckwheat crepe!

To wrap up dinner, we had the sesame ice-cream which used a soy milk base instead of milk/cream. I'd like to try to make this with my ice-cream maker, anyone know of a good soy milk based ice-cream?

veggie conversation

I had lunch with Bill who i hadn't seen in over a month. It was just a good time to catch up with my old housemate/good friend and so we decided to meet up at a vegetarian restaurant in Scarborough that my family actually used to go to quite often back in the day. We ate for almost 3 hours with food in our bowls.. just like good old times.. relationships and thesis talk.

Lotus - stir fried eel

Lotus Vegetarian restaurant has a lot of simple vegetarian dishes but also many of what i would call mock vegetarian dishes. They often imitate meat in both visual appearance, texture and taste. This is a stir fried dishe with mock eel (made with mushrooms) and sprouts.

Lotus - dim sum

We also ordered various dim sum dishes that included a dumpling made of bean stalk leaves, a fritter that i simply called a "football" since i was a kid, and eggplant/tofu stuffed with mock fish paste.

Lotus - fried rice

and of course mock chicken and mock salted fish fried rice. How do they get the flavours and texture so perfectly? i have no idea.. but it was damn good!

May has been to the vegetarian restaurant that my family goes to more often now, but i still need to take her here.
