brunch and bowling

Earlier in May's birthday weekend festivities, she wished to have brunch and bowling with some of her closest friends.  So we went to Paese on King street, and then walked five minutes over to the Ballroom.

Our bowling venue was pretty set, so it was my task to find a brunch place nearby, which suprisingly was a lot harder to find than I thought.  There is a lot of pre-theater type dinner places in the King/John area, but brunch not so much.  And of course, we've been to O&B so many times in addition to my birthday, so we weren't going to do that again.

May and I had the steak and eggs platter for two, which as you can see was a pretty sad dish. The steak was had good flavour since it was fatty but otherwise had very little value or interest especially priced at $35 (Celine+Jin shared the same dish and were equally dissapointed). You'd think they could at least put an arugula salad with the dish and make it more filling to share between two people.

What we gathered from everyone else's dishes was the food was fairly decent. The marscapone scrambled eggs (top left) was well made and tasty. My brother had a craving for the potato pizza and it hit the spot. Shirley ordered the sweet polenta (bottem left) and thought it was a unique combination. And we enjoyed the pear and gorgonzola salad to help round out our incomplete first dish.

We really enjoyed the large square table in the restaurant space, it made for easy conversation, and perfect to present the birthday cake (more on the cake later). Our server was a little difficult, and made a fuss when we asked for separate bills, even though we saw him separate it for another table (he never asked us in begining when he took our orders, and it should have been his resposibility to if it was so complicated). The rest of the staff and back kitchen otherwise was very warm and accomidating, especially helping me out with lighting the birthday candles.

After brunch we made our way to the relatively new ballroom. A fairly trendy and inviting space with a full bar and restaurant seating upstairs. We snacked on a gargantuan order of nachos, which were amazing. The kind of nachos that has the same crunch and topping consistency from the first to the last bite. The deep fried pickles were also very well made, and not something you see often. We will definitely be back for more bowling and food, theres a great variety of bar food choices on their menu.
